Clotho was the youngest of the three Fates. The Fates were sister goddesses of fate and destiny the role of which was often alluded to with the metaphor of spinning cloth. Clotho would spin the threads, Lachesis would measure and inspect the cloth with a rod, and Atropos would shear and cut the cloth. This served as a metaphor for creating life, assessing the quality of life, and ultimately ending it with death. Clotho who was spinning the cloth would decide when and where each mortal would be born. Thus she had a major impact of what life each mortal had the potential to live.
