Lachesis was the middle member of the Fates. The Fates were sister goddesses of fate and destiny the role of which was often alluded to with the metaphor of spinning cloth. Clotho would spin the threads, Lachesis would measure and inspect the cloth with a rod, and Atropos would shear and cut the cloth. This served as a metaphor for creating life, assessing the quality of life, and ultimately ending it with death. Lachesis’ role in measuring and inspecting the cloth meant that 3 days after the baby was born she would decide what kind of life it would live. She was usually depicted wearing white.
